A female private detective in 1908? Miss Cora M. Strayer, I lift my glass to you. I’ll bet you were an interesting person to know.
Note: Apparently Mr. Geo. S. Holben, Supt. Criminal Dept., was shot by a disgruntled former employee in 1910. (Los Angeles Herald, December 06, 1910).According to the 1913 edition of the Chicago Blue Book, Miss. Strayer’s Detective Agency was still in business, although Mr. Holben’s name no longer appeared in the advertisement.
Check this out: “Progressive” is viewed more positively than “conservative” and every other political label in America.
Christmas of my future??…at least I’m honest with myself.
Honesty is the best policy, right? Sad, but so very very true.
Deja Vu: 1995 Government Shutdown
Tomorrow it will be 16 years since a confrontation between the White House and the Republican congressional leadership over the budget results in a partial shutdown of the federal government. December 16, 1995.
Take a look at President Clinton’s statement on the impending shutdown and budget negotiations from December 15, 1995.
WHAT?!? Hilary is a cat lady? How did I never know this? I may just love her more now.
First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and Socks the cat hang out for the holidays in the White House. December, 1995.
The Clinton Presidential Library is launching a collection of photos in the Flickr Commons. To start, there’s photos of President Clinton at work, with foreign Heads of State, and for some holiday cheer we’ve found pics of Socks the cat at Christmas time.
Still to come: sets featuring Hillary, Chelsea, events from the Clinton administration, and of course, Buddy, the Clinton’s dog. Check it out in the U.S. National Archives Flickr Photostream.
December 15th is Bill of Rights Day!Did you know two parchment Bills of Rights are at the National Archives? The official record copy of the Bill of Rights is displayed in the Rotunda of the National Archives. A less familiar Bill of Rights is seen in the photo. Each of the States of the Union received a parchment copy listing 12 proposed amendments to the Constitution to be ratified. Delaware returned to the United States its ratification message written at the bottom of the parchment list of proposed amendments. There are plans to exhibit this record at the Delaware State Archives in spring 2012.
It’s about that time…
….to finally get one of these. I’ve been saying forever that I should blog beyond paragraph-long Facebook statuses and multiple Tweets, so here it is. I really love writing (especially non-academic writing when I get the time….but hey, I’m a law student, so when will that ever happen? You’re right - rarely.) I’ve started this, however, to attempt to get back into regular writing, especially about life and contemporary issues, because it’s been too long. This will mostly focus on my life (well, duh) and my interests: social justice, government, politics, cultural issues, law, law school, fashion, fitness, and all the shenanigans and adventures of a 20-something. Enjoy!
